# Clicking Techniques: Standard, Jitter & Butterfly

How you click has a bigger effect on your CPS score than almost anything else, including your mouse. The three most common techniques produce very different results:

Standard clicking

Using a single finger with a relaxed, natural motion. Most people land between 4 and 7 CPS this way, and it's the only technique that reflects how you'll actually click during real gameplay rather than during a test.

Jitter clicking

Tensing your arm and forearm muscles to create a rapid vibration that transfers into fast, repeated clicks through a stiffened finger. This can push scores into the 10–14 CPS range for practiced players, but it's tiring to sustain and rarely reflects natural in-game clicking behavior.

Butterfly clicking

Alternating two fingers rapidly on the same mouse button so each finger only has to move at half the effective rate. This can produce the highest CPS scores of the three techniques, sometimes 15+ CPS, but many competitive games and rulesets restrict or ban it since the rapid alternating pattern can resemble macro or auto-clicker behavior.

# How to Improve Your CPS Score

Raising your click speed is mostly about technique and equipment rather than raw effort. A few adjustments tend to make the biggest difference for most players:

Relax your grip

A tense, white-knuckle grip slows down muscle recovery between clicks. Keeping your hand and forearm loose lets your finger reset faster, which usually raises sustained CPS more than clicking harder.

Use a lighter mouse switch

Mechanical mouse switches with a shorter travel distance and lower actuation force register clicks faster and let your finger return to the ready position sooner. Many gaming mice list their switch type and actuation force in their specs, so this is worth checking if your CPS score consistently feels capped by your hardware rather than your technique.

Warm up before testing

Cold fingers click slower. A short warm-up — a few seconds of light clicking or hand stretches — before attempting a serious CPS run can noticeably improve your peak score, especially on longer 30 or 60 second tests where endurance matters more than a quick burst.

Test at your natural pace first

Before trying jitter or butterfly clicking, establish your standard baseline. It's the score that actually reflects your in-game clicking, and it gives you a fair number to compare future improvement against.
